| Descripción: | This article carried out a long-term analysis of the so-called “anticlerical laws” decreed in Costa Rica in 1884. This was achieved by reinterpreting the concept of secularization and reviewing the relationships of collaboration and dependence between the State and the Catholic Church in Costa Rica during the period between 1821 and 1949. This allowed us to present and, therefore, understand the real meaning and impact that these laws had on the aforementioned relationships. To this end, primary sources were consulted from the physical and digital newspaper archives of the Biblioteca Nacional de Costa Rica (BNCR), the Archivo Nacional de Costa Rica (ANCR), and the ecclesiastical archives of the Archdiocese of San José (AHABATH) and Alajuela (AHDA). Additionally, data was collected from the Vatican archives, including the Vatican Apostolic Archive (AAV), the Archive of the Secretariat of State (AAEESS), the Archive of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (APF), the Dominican Historical Archive (AHOP), and the Historical Archive of the Society of Jesus (AHSI). All of this led to the conclusion that, in the Costa Rican case, secularization is much more than the separation of powers and is rather linked to the relationships that both institutions developed in their various roles in the history of Costa Rica during the period under study. |
