Phylogeographic Insights into Brucella abortus Circulating in Latin America

Kuvaus:Recent large-scale genomic studies have identified four major clades withing the global phylogeography landscape of Brucella abortus as well as distinctive clades within single countries. Understanding the dispersion and divergence of B. abortus is essential for effective control measures particularly aimed at animal movements regulations. Here we describe a global and regional phylogeographical analysis of B. abortus genomes obtained from 449 isolates recovered from bovines, humans, and a variety of other hosts such as fox, weasel, horse, buffalo, and ferret. There are 237 isolates from Argentina, 135 from Costa Rica, 37 from Chile, 18 from Colombia, 9 from El Salvador, 7 from Brazil, 3 from Mexico, 2 from Peru and 1 from Bolivia, from 1958 to 2022. The complete dataset comprised 596 genomes and 595,590 core SNPs. As expected, these Latin American isolates are within clade D, the mostwidely distributed worldwide and frequent in America. The Argentine isolates form a distinct sub lineage within clade D, interspersed with genomes from neighboring countries, suggesting historical regional gene flow. Similar to Costa Rica, withinArgentina, multiple genotypes are evident according to geographical region. Remarkably, a 1958 bovine isolate differs by fewer than 20 SNPs from one recovered in 2022. Despite its restricted diversity, there is enough genomic resolution to track transboundary movement and local persistence, reinforcing the value of long-term WGS surveillance in understanding the subtle phylogeographic dynamics of clonal pathogens.
