Spectral agency and hybrid wills: criteria of personal identity in the face of invasive closed-loop neurotechnologies

| Περιγραφή: | This article addresses the breakdown of classical criteria of personal identity and moral agency in light of invasive closed-loop neurotechnologies, devices that combine brain-computer interfaces and deep brain stimulation with machine-learning algorithms able to anticipate and modulate neural states before these reach the threshold of conscious awareness. It starts from the premise that such systems, rather than functioning as passive corrective tools, operate as active coagents of human action, insofar as their automated interventions precede and at times replace the conscious deliberation of the implanted subject. On this basis, the article examines how Locke's criterion of continuity of consciousness and memory, together with Parfit's reductionist account of the psychological relation R, prove insufficient to explain a personal identity that is externally modulated without the subject's deliberate consent at each specific intervention, particularly when the modulation precedes any possibility of conscious veto. It also examines the phenomenology of neurotechnological alienation reported in clinical cases, where patients describe losing recognition of their own moods as a symptom of fractured moral authorship. On these grounds, it argues that individual authenticity, understood as an unaltered character, must give way to a notion of agency distributed between the embodied subject and the device. The article adopts an approach grounded in applied neuroethics and philosophy of mind, which allows the reconstruction of hybrid agency as the dynamic functional coupling between the embodied mind and the algorithmic system, a coupling from which a distributed and spectral moral authorship emerges. |
