| Popis: | Goitered gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa) are bred on state farms in Southeast Türkiye as part of desert wildlife conservation. A brucellosis outbreak caused abortion in these animals and B. melitensis was isolated from an aborted fetus. Multiplex PCR confirmed the isolate as B. melitensis. A total of 164 serum samples (70 males, 94 females) were randomly collected from the approximately 900 captive gazelles and were tested with ELISA to determine serological status. Obtaining serum samples was difficult to take blood samples, as the gazelles are free roaming and are prone to injury during capture. The antigen used in ELISA was lipopolysaccharide and the secondary antibody was recombinant A/G protein conjugated HRP. A total of 32 (19,5%) serum samples were found as seropositive (12 positive males, 20 positive females). All the animals were subsequently vaccinated with B. melitensis Rev.1 conjunctival vaccine. Necessary biosafety measures were taken in the farm and required training were given to the staff dealing with animals. Brucellosis is endemic in Türkiye and the identification of B. melitensis from gazelles is likely the result of contact with small ruminants. Epidemiological investigation involving whole genome sequencing are being performed to determine the possible source of the outbreak and to prevent future outbreaks and human infections. |
