| Omschrijving: | In this first-person essay, I reflect on the “epistemic hurricanes” that have transformed the way I understand and approach concrete realities as a social scientist. Drawing on my journey through the Doctoral Program in Society and Culture Studies at the University of Costa Rica, I revisit the path that began with my research at the School of Psychology at the National University on the Psychological and social experiences of men with Mesoamerican Nephropathy and their families in the Chorotega Region of Costa Rica. The text is structured in three acts. In the first, I narrate my transition from an individually focused psychology toward systemic and community-based approaches, influenced by Marxist theories and a critical Latin American perspective. In the second act, I explore how new epistemological and political perspectives have led me to problematize power relations within the capitalist model as a generator of illness, suffering, and death. Finally, in the third act, I propose a view of Mesoamerican Nephropathy as a symptom of a historically unequal social system, rooted in power relations and forms of exploitation inherited from colonialism. This perspective adds complexity to the understanding of the disease, situating it within structurally unequal socio-cultural contexts that tend to dehumanize the individual. |
