How civil engineering preserves cultural heritage and promotes social equity in Latin America

| Opis: | Civil engineering plays a key role in the conservation of cultural heritage and the promotion of social justice in Latin America, which is distinguished by its architectural legacy, but also by the persistence of inequalities in the urban sphere. Based on a systematic review, this paper analyzes how civil engineering interventions, such as the seismic retrofitting of historic adobe structures and urban transportation planning, contribute to achieving these goals. Twenty-six studies published between 2020 and 2025, corresponding to countries such as Peru, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, were reviewed. The results show that seismic retrofitting increases the resilience of heritage buildings to earthquakes and culturally safeguards elements in vulnerable contexts such as the Andes. Transportation fare subsidy policies are more egalitarian among low-income groups than infrastructure improvements favoring the middle class. The review highlights the role of civil engineering in building resilient and equitable cities and makes recommendations for future interventions in the functioning of civil engineering, balancing structural safety and social inclusion in the Latin American context. |
