Descrição:[Introduction]: In central Chile, landscape fragmentation and forest loss have caused a drastic decline in the population of the huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) in the Nevados de Chillán–Laguna del Laja Biological Corridor Biosphere Reserve. [Objective]: To determine priority areas for the conservation of the huemul habitat within the Biosphere Reserve, integrating habitat suitability and vulnerability models to threats. [Methodology]: Spatial models of summer and winter habitat suitability were developed based on ecological and geographical variables, along with a vulnerability model based on threats associated with huemul presence. Both outputs were integrated to prioritize conservation areas for the species’ habitat. [Results]: The analyses indicate that more than 53% of the Reserve’s area (approximately 300,000 hectares) lacks suitable habitat, with low connectivity and critical fragmentation resulting from the analyzed threats. In winter, these conditions worsen, restricting huemul habitat and increasing its vulnerability. [Discussion]: The results highlight the need to implement land-use planning strategies aimed at defining exclusion zones, restoring ecological connectivity, and expanding the network of protected areas. [Conclusions]: For effective conservation of the species’ habitat and the recovery of its population within the Reserve and adjacent areas, it is essential to integrate ecological criteria into territorial planning and land management through coordinated actions between public and private stakeholders, as well as through the adaptation of existing regulations and instruments in Chile that govern rural land use.
