Descripción:This paper aims to demonstrate the historic and geographic process of human settlement at Canavieiras, BA, and its transformation over the years. The research was based on books, articles from newspapers and magazines or published on the internet and information collected in official websites about the city of Canavieiras and historical aspects of the southern region of Bahia. Canavieiras is one of the most relevant cities in the South of Bahia due both to its past and its ongoing pursuit of economic diversification. The human settlement and development processes of this area mix into a regional context. In booming times, this city used to be one of the region’s major cocoa producers, which contributed to the dismemberment of its territory and created new cities. Canavieiras lost its local socio-economic importance with the crash in cocoa production caused by witches’ broom disease. The city has since strived to recover by diversifying its economy.
