University extension experience in rural territorial development in the northern part of Costa Rica

| Miêu tả: | During 2018-2020, the Sección Regional Huetar Norte and Caribe Headquarters and the School of Planning and Social Promotion at the Universidad Nacional of Costa Rica developed the extension initiative “Territorial Rural Development Management in three communities in the Sarapiquí canton,” with active participation from various local rural groups. This article aims to qualitatively explore the case study of rural development implemented from 2018 to 2020 with four rural women’s groups, to identify the strengths of rural development processes within three fundamental thematic categories determined in their context: food security-sovereignty, interinstitutional coordination, and organizational-community strengthening. The results highlight the relevance of key values such as trust, empowerment, and social cohesion, centered around people and their harmony with nature. The vitality of the extension process delves into methodologies, comprehensive treatments, and epistemic justice through participation and the promotion of interdisciplinarity and public regional inter-institutional collaboration. In summary, the case study demonstrates the university’s contribution to community management: how the analysis of the situation allows for project contextualization and the generation of fundamental categories to explore, the key role of participation, the exchange of knowledge, felt needs, and the community’s everyday life. The experience shows the importance of adapting the extension process according to suitable experiential methodologies, as they challenge reality and aim for the appropriation of learning. |
