Deskribapena:This article analyzes the forced recruitment of peasants, known as “patillos”, by the Costa Rican government between May and September 1919. It investigates their use as a military force in the Battle of El Jobo and in the repression of protests. The study documents the voucher controversy, concerning the government’s debt to the “patillos” for their service. These payment vouchers were not honored due to multiple failures: state mismanagement, banking problems, the issuance of defective sheet banknotes, and legal restrictions. This situation resulted in an unpaid debt to the militiamen, demonstrating the State’s failure to meet its obligations and the precarious administrative situation of the period.
