Descripción:In Costa Rica, women's rights in the 21st century have experienced both significant advances and persistent challenges.  In this essay, we analyze the achievements and setbacks in the promotion of gender equality and women's rights in the current context, in the face of the advance of a neoliberal model of society, the emergence of conservative discourses and a revival of neo-machismo in some sectors of Costa Rican society. This essay aims to promote awareness of the importance of gender equality and women's empowerment and to highlight the need for concrete actions to guarantee and strengthen women's rights in all levels of society. The análisis is based on a bibliographic review of official sources to obtain updated data on the situation of women in Costa Rica.  It also considers the achievements at the national level and the contributions of public universities, particularly the Universidad Nacional, in the construction of a more egalitarian society free of gender violence, through the introduction of women's studies and gender studies. It presents a balance of the lags and pending debts that limit gender equality.
