What Do We Breathe? Construction of Knowledge and Environmental Awareness Between the University and High School Through University Extension

Descripción:This work aimed to address an environmental problem related to human health to respond to students and teachers’ concerns from two secondary schools in the city of San Luis (Argentina). These concerns originated from secondary school social actors’ who desired to know the biological quality of the air they breathe daily in the environments in which they carry out their school activities. Through joint work between the extension team of the Faculty of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Pharmacy of the National University of San Luis and the school community, it was sought to build knowledge related to environmental education in a dialogic framework. While developing this work, discussion and reflection on the use of ornamental plant species in the city’s green spaces and their impact on public health were encouraged. The proposed methodology included face-to-face workshops, for which theoretical-practical guides were prepared, appropriate to the academic level of the students and specific to the topics to approach in this work. The knowledge obtained was successfully applied in simple experimental activities related to research tasks in Aerobiology at the university. Thus, the students could participate in the generation of useful knowledge for themselves, the extension team, and the community of San Luis, in general.
