Environmental Education in the Framework of a Participatory Strategy to Address Climate Change at the Local Level: Experiences in Costa Rica

Descripción: | On the issue of the climate change, Costa Rica, as a country, has made progress in establishing public policies, financing mechanisms, market incentives and other matters in sectors considered as a priority in relation to generating greenhouse gas emissions. At domestic level, important efforts have been made, but there are deficits at approaching the issue. Local spaces are important, since it is there that efforts are joined to implement the policies and actions proposed at national and global levels. The objective of this work is to systematize the results of a process of environmental education in three local experiences where a climate change strategy has been applied at the local level in Costa Rica. The methodological approach and the outcomes are described following modalities of environmental education throughout four years of relation to management projects and environmental education. The main conclusion is that environmental education in different modalities is complementary, and constitutes a key element to work on the climate change issue at the local level where communities and social actors, educated in environmental topics, can become subjects of development, as well as participants in decision-making processes and in defining public policies for their territory. |
