Descripción: | The Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago in Cuba merges conservation and economic interests associated with tourism. The intensive development of this economic activity in specific poles, such as the keys to the north of Ciego de Ávila, in addition to the effects of climate change, has generated multiple effects on their marine ecosystems. Despite being diverse, studies have been isolated and not systematic, which is the reason why the Coastal Ecosystem Research Center developed a new monitoring program to raise quality, fill in knowledge gaps, and save time and resources. This research aims to design a geographic information system (GIS) to be implemented in the planning of marine expeditions in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago. According to the characteristics of the study area and the particularities of the research project, a database was integrated with bio-physical and management information for the development of applications with spatial and statistical analysis tools to facilitate the proper planning of field activities. The plan for this campaign resulted in 48 suitable sites to develop the dives, grouped into 16 maritime routes, based on favorable conditions synergistically analyzed, with distribution and characteristics of marine habitats, bathymetry, and logistics, among others. The planning of marine expeditions using GIS improved organization, effectiveness, and quality and saved time and resources. |
