Validation of Quick Analysis Methods for Fresh Surface Waters

Descripción:The Water Resources Management Laboratory ( LAMRHI) of the Universidad Nacional carries out research-social action projects which characterize physical, chemical and biologically superficial waters of different zones of the country. In addition to this action, the communities close to the river are involved in the activities in order to understand the parameters analyzed, so they carry out river protection actions. To accomplish that, workshops are carried out in which community groups and population, in general, analyze the water quality using a manual and a fast analysis kit developed at our laboratory based on qualitative and semi-quantitative methods, which are of low cost, easy realization and interpretation for them. Parameters like dissolved oxygen, pH, soluble phosphates, temperature and cloudiness are included. Equipment specially designed for field tests and the support of a log book makes easier the information collection and its subsequent analysis and comparison with previous measures. The application of fast analysis allows the detection of abrupt changes in the river conditions, the search of causes and effects, in addition, contributes to the appropriation of the comprehensive water management process by the population with more cognitive elements to take decisions. Besides, it facilitates the formation of alarm networks, which, if they were needed, would have immediate access to scientific, academic and health institutions. It is always necessary the consolidation of a management group responsible and trained. This study describes the fast methods kit and the tests in it, the process of training and the validation tests.
