Evaluation of Allyl Isothiocyanate for the Control of Helicotylenchus (Nematoda: Hoplolaimidae) in Tomatoes in Barva, Heredia

| Description: | Tomato production faces important challenges associated with plant-parasitic nematodes. Chemical nematicides, although effective, pose environmental and health risks, which has driven the search for sustainable alternatives such as botanical nematicides. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of an allyl isothiocyanate-based nematicide on populations of Helicotylenchus spp. during the tomato crop cycle. The experiment was conducted at the Santa Lucía Experimental Farm (Barva, Heredia), in a 297 m² plot with 200 plants. A completely randomized design with four replicates and five treatments was used: T1 (0.16 g/L), T2 (0.32 g/L), and T3 (0.64 g/L) of allyl isothiocyanate, T4 (oxamyl 24% w/v at 5 g/L), and T5 (absolute control). Three nematological samplings were carried out during the crop cycle. The initial population of Helicotylenchus spp. was homogeneous, allowing treatment application. At 10 days, T2, T3, and T4 significantly reduced nematode populations, whereas T1 and T5 showed the highest values. However, after two months, no significant differences were detected between the treatments. It is concluded that allyl isothiocyanate and oxamyl are effective in the short term, but their effect is not sustained over time. |
