The Construction of Female Identity in Costa Rican Journalistic Discourse: A Comparison Between Women’s Suffrage and the Technical Standard on Therapeutic Abortion (1949–2019)

| Diğer Bilgiler: | Women’s suffrage in 1949 and the signing of the technical guidelines for therapeutic abortion in 2019 were established in Costa Rican society as achievements of the feminist movement. However, they were not free from criticism and female stereotypes that ultimately influence women’s self-image and the structures built around them. This article aims to compare the construction of female identity in the Costa Rican press during the debates on women’s suffrage and the technical guidelines for therapeutic abortion, to identify similarities and differences in the representations of women between these two historical periods. The methodology is qualitative, using content analysis of news articles published during the year of the legislative debate, the year of approval, and the following year in both cases. Variables in a database were also used to identify elements within the articles that contribute to the creation of this identity, and the findings were then compared with Judith Butler’s theory of gender performance. A similarity was identified in the configuration of a static identity in the 70 years that passed: the substitution of the traditional female identity by the critique of a gender ideology, but above all the primacy of maternal identity over the identity of the woman as an autonomous being, both as a factor in not granting them the right to vote, and as a supremacy of the fetus over the health of the woman in therapeutic abortion. |
