Requirements of Health Promotion Professionals of the School of Public Health in the University of Costa Rica for the Costa Rican Society Until the Second Half of 2012

Descripción:The School of Public Health of the University of Costa Rica conducted an investigation called “Requirements of Health Promotion Professionals for the Costa Rican society until the second half of 2012”. This is because the School launched the undergraduate program in Health Promotion in the 2007, in accordance with the declaration of Ottawa on the foundations promoting health in human populations. This study measured the requirements of Health promotion professionals in Costa Rica. It also analyzed the positioning of the health promotion matter, as well as the characteristics of the professionals in this area, their competences, knowledge and profile in the career of the School of Public Health. In addition, it analyzed the potential employers’ perception on the topics addressed, the requirements, the activities, and the areas of work for health promotion professionals. The study answered the following research question: What are the requirements of health promotion professionals for the Costa Rican society? The research was conducted by implementing a quantitative, descriptive and exploratory methodology. Three hundred eighty-five interviews were conducted, with a margin of error of 5% and an alpha of 95% .The questionnaire was developed as a research tool, and it was tested through the pilot test. The investigation produced very relevant information for the School of Public Health, the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Costa Rica, students and professionals in health promotion, as well as for the Costa Rican society, institutions, organizations and social groups. Recommendations were made, such as checking the Health Promotion curricular grid of the School of Public Health of the University of Costa Rica against the results of the study. It was also recommended a communication plan to promote health promotion and its professionals in Costa Rican society.
