Theoretical Foundations for Modular Curriculum Design in Virtual Pedagogy: A Systematized Literature Review in Higher Education

| Beschreibung: | This article presents a systematized literature review developed as part of a doctoral research process aimed at informing curriculum decisions for the design of a modular concentration in Virtual Pedagogy within the Master’s Degree in Education of the División de Educología at Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica. The review focused on scholarly literature published mainly between 2020 and 2026, incorporating classic references when indispensable due to their conceptual contribution. Methodologically, the procedure was organized into phases (conceptualization, search, selection, data collection, evaluation, synthesis, and writing), with an emphasis on Higher Education and university teacher education. Findings were structured around six analytical axes: 1) pedagogy, virtuality, and virtual pedagogy; 2) curriculum design; 3) modular structure; 4) pedagogical mediation in virtual environments; 5) assessment of learning in virtual settings; and 6) design and innovation in digital educational resources. The critical synthesis showed that virtuality is not merely a delivery mode, but a complex socio-pedagogical field that requires epistemic foundations, intentional mediation, integrated assessment, and cross-cutting principles of inclusion and accessibility. It is concluded that virtual pedagogy, from a critical and situated perspective, should be translated into explicit curricular criteria that articulate graduate profiles, formative axes, and modules aimed at strengthening teaching competencies for the design of virtual and hybrid learning experiences, moving beyond tool-centered technocentric approaches. |
