Medea in the Atacama: Ancestral female power, introspection and gender vindication

| Beschreibung: | This article is based on the experimental film Medea (2019), directed by Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Moreno, to analyze the ancestral feminine power manifested in the protagonist Medea and, in this way, position her as a feminist symbol of matrifocal culture. For this purpose, we draw on theoretical information about: 1) the ancestral power of Mother Goddesses, 2) the symbolism of aquatic elements, minerals, and mineraloids, as well as underground cavities, and 3) radical feminism. From our analysis, we find that Medea, who is in the Atacama Desert, conducts an introspective analysis of her gender condition. Metaphorically, she “digs her own mine,” becoming aware that the ancestral power of the Mother Goddess-represented by the aquatic element of the conch shell- dwells in her and in all women because they are descendants of primal feminine forces. Consequently, she attributes to herself mineral and mineraloid characteristics that reveal this ancestral power. This empowerment allows her to break with the mandates of the patriarchal system and assert herself as a woman, wife, and mother. Finally, we conclude that Medea stands as an emblem of ancestral feminine power, which prevails over male aggression and preserves the supremacy of creation and motherhood. |
