Circular economy applications in Cuban tourist accommodation: challenges and best practices

| Descripció: | [Introduction]: Cuba is making progress in developing a regulatory framework to integrate sustainable approaches into economic development. In this context, tourism is recognized as a strategic sector where the circular economy is key to transforming management patterns. However, the national scientific literature on its specific application in the hotel industry is limited, making it difficult to identify obstacles, benefits, and replicable best practices. [Objective]: Given this gap, the objective of the research was to characterize the application of the circular economy in tourist accommodation entities in Cuba. [Methodology]: The methodological design adopted a mixed descriptive approach, a structured questionnaire was administered to 25 public and private sector tourist accommodation establishments, a literature review and document analysis were used, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to measure the reliability of the instrument, and the results were triangulated. [Results]: Regulatory advances were observed to promote the circular economy in tourism, but their application in entities remains incipient and is limited to energy efficiency and waste management actions. Benefits such as cost optimization and environmental recovery were identified, as well as barriers such as insufficient financing and the need for training, key elements for guiding professional training from academic institutions and programs of the Ministry of Tourism. [Conclusions]: The research provides a basis for decision-making and highlights the need to develop comprehensive strategies to assess, compare, and scale progress toward sustainable competitiveness in Cuban tourism. |
