The influence of employment on poverty reduction in Costa Rica: A quantitative analysis

| Descripción: | This article analyzes the influence of employment on poverty reduction, taking into account its relationship with other sociodemographic factors. To this end, a novel econometric approach is applied to qualitative information from Costa Rica’s Encuesta Nacional de Hogares (National Household Survey, ENAHO), through a representative value encoding technique. This approach replaces the use of “k-1” dummy variables (dichotomous variables commonly used in econometric studies) by constructing numerical variables from ENAHO’s categorical variables, so as to adequately represent dimensions such as employment quality, job hierarchy, and household vulnerability, among others. The results indicate that, based on the average values of the explanatory variables for the population living in poverty, the estimated probability of remaining in that situation is 65.60%. However, if this same group were to attain at least a complete secondary education level, an intermediate command of information and communication technologies (ICT) and English, at least half of the favorable employment conditions, and a position at the production worker level or above, the probability of living in poverty would decrease by 56.59 percentage points, falling to a probability of 9.01%. In other words, if the conditions of people living in poverty were improved and opportunities to access relatively formal employment were created, it is estimated that the majority of these households could escape their current situation of poverty. These findings highlight the impact of quality employment and education on poverty reduction and are key to the design of effective public policies that promote the revitalization of the local labor market, technical and professional training, social mobility, and labor inclusion. |
