Descripción: | This article analyzes the expansion in the number of the published novels in Costa Rica which was favored by the growth of private publishing activity. Therefore, this process depended on the economic capacity of the authors (men more than women) to finance their works. Starting in the 21st century, self-publishing was reinforced by the emergence of platforms where it is possible to publish for free, such as Amazon. Because this boom of published novels did not respond to an effective demand from diverse audiences of readers, it was limited in scope: writers typically published only one novel, and mostly only one edition was published. |
