Disgrifiad:Using an overall human development index and data from the 2000 and 2011 census, this paper shows how districts with a stronger FDI presence (that is districts producing pineapple and bananas) are concentrated in social and economic development positions lower than those districts with mixed or national investment, which are concentrated in intermediate positions (that is districts producing coffee and flowers). This condition is due to the governance exercised by larger companies on the agricultural chains, which generates dependence from small and medium producers to market their products as well as intensive use of low-paid production factors such as workforce.
