| Descripción: | This study describes the pronunciation-teaching techniques and corrective feedback practices used by two English teachers in the Oral Communication course (call-center track) at a technical high school in Heredia, Costa Rica, during the third trimester of 2019. A triangulation mixed-methods design combined teacher questionnaires and a semi-structured interview, a student questionnaire (n=34), and four classroom observations. Results suggest that pronunciation instruction was largely incidental and relied mostly on imitation through repetition. Across four observations, teachers used repetition 10 times, while auditory support (Google Translate) and a reading technique were observed only once each. In terms of corrective feedback, 73 pronunciation errors were identified; teachers omitted correction in 55 instances (75%), provided immediate correction in 8 (11%), modeled the correct pronunciation in 8 (11%), elicited self-correction in 2 (3%), and did not use delayed correction. Student perceptions aligned with observation findings: most learners reported limited explicit pronunciation teaching, infrequent correction, and little evidence of systematic progress tracking. The study argues that improving intelligibility for employment-related oral communication requires planned pronunciation work, a broader repertoire of techniques, and consistent feedback routines. Practical recommendations include integrating short pronunciation cycles into every lesson, prioritizing high-impact segmentals and suprasegmentals, and using simple record-keeping tools to monitor recurring errors and learner progress. |
