Between crossroads and solidarity: women in the cooperative labor sphere in western Costa Rica (2022-2023)

| Descrizione: | This article analyzes the daily life and support networks among women cooperative workers in the Western Region of Costa Rica. It investigates the naturalization of women’s work overload and the impact of these networks on their professional development and work-life balance. The main objective is to identify the empowering factors derived from supportive relationships among women in the cooperative context, beyond formal organizational policies. The methodology used is qualitative, based on interviews with women workers from various cooperatives, which allows us to analyze their experiences and perceptions of their work environment. The results reveal that, although gender inequalities persist in the cooperative environment, mutual support among women emerges as the main empowering factor in their professional development. This support is highlighted in daily cooperation, which helps in reconciling responsibilities and emotional well-being at work. Such support does not depend exclusively on formal cooperative policies, but on informal relationships of solidarity that foster a motivating and trusting work environment. In conclusion, although the cooperative model also reflects women’s work overload, support networks among women not only improve their well-being but also challenge patriarchal structures, promoting a reconfiguration of traditional labor dynamics. However, the sustainability of this model depends on internal management and interpersonal relationships, which represent a challenge to consolidate these advances in the long term. Further research is recommended on the implementation of policies that strengthen these ties and promote gender equality in cooperatives. |
