Descripción:Asynchronous virtual courses raise questions about the level and type of learning they foster, as well as the quality of understanding they help develop. Assessing their effectiveness and design is challenging without a theoretical framework that enables the categorization of key aspects of understanding and the learning process. This article aims to analyze the Geographic Information Systems course offered by the Universidad Estatal a Distancia of Costa Rica and its capacity to promote understanding and learning. The methodology proposes a definition of eight pedagogical categories to evaluate the course, complemented by the results of a survey administered to 24 individuals who completed it between 2015 and 2024. The findings show that the course includes activities that support the application of theoretical–practical concepts in real-world scenarios relevant to students. Likewise, participants remember and apply the knowledge acquired in their own contexts satisfactorily. In conclusion, the analysis shows that the training program can be strengthened by incorporating thinking routines, peer-to-peer exchange spaces, and activities that enhance analysis, reflection, and the application of concepts in real-world scenarios throughout all modules. However, even with these areas for improvement, the course structure still supports long-term understanding and interest.
