| Beschreibung: | This article seeks to reflect on the meanings that obstetric violence acquires in light of Indigenous women’s experiences in Argentina as they move through the healthcare system. To this end, it analyzes discursive interventions by women from different Indigenous peoples during the First Forum on Respectful Indigenous Birth. The forum was held in 2021, within the framework of the implementation process of the National Law on “Parto Respetado” (Law 25.929 of 2004) in the Province of Buenos Aires. The study aims to examine how women re-signify the category of obstetric violence from their childbirth experiences and their positions as political referents of their respective communities. The information analyzed was produced through an ethnographic perspective and methodology and placed in dialogue with contributions from the anthropology of reproduction and gender-based violence studies. The main findings show that these interventions render visible specific forms of discrimination in pregnancy and childbirth care. The interventions also broaden the meanings attributed to obstetric violence, incorporating dimensions related to cultural diversity and conceptions of body, health, and reproduction. This shift makes it possible to account for the variable, situational, and historical character of violence, as well as for the relevance of naming violence in processes of public policy formulation within a rights-based framework. |
