Biostimulant effect of a biol on two lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) varieties at the Los Juncos Experimental Station, Coronado, Costa Rica

Deskribapena:The use of biofertilizers (biols) offers a sustainable alternative for improving soil fertility, stimulating plant growth, and reducing dependence on synthetic inputs. This study evaluated, under greenhouse conditions, the effect of four foliar doses of biol (0, 2, 4, and 6%) on morphological and growth variables of two lettuce varieties (Lactuca sativa L.): Americana and Lollo rosa. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized split-plot design with 24 experimental units (blocks). Each block consisted of 30 plants arranged in three rows of ten plants each. Treatments were randomly assigned with three replicates per dose and variety, for a total of 720 plants. The biol, prepared through chelation and mineralization phases, was applied through foliar spray at 6, 14, and 22 days after sowing. It showed high macro-and micronutrient concentrations and an electrical conductivity of 30.7 mS cm-¹, higher than the values reported for animal-based biols, with no adverse effects. The variables evaluated included plant height, root length and diameter, root weight, and fresh and dry biomass. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences only in dry biomass (p = 0.0276), with the 6% dose performing best. Foliar biol application confirmed to be an effective and sustainable option for horticultural nutrition.
