Characterization of agroecological initiatives in Costa Rica: An exploratory look at their potential and challenges

| Descripción: | The article presents the findings of the research Exploratory Mapping of Agroecological Education, Marketing, and Production Initiatives in Costa Rica, conducted between May 2023 and November 2024, with the support of the Center for the Valorization of Agro-Food and Artisan Products Differentiated by Their Biocultural and Geographical Origin Qualities (CADENAGRO) at the National University. The objective was to identify agroecological experiences at the national level to provide public information on initiatives that had not been previously systematized or recorded. In the last decade, Agroecology has gained relevance in Costa Rica, despite the challenge posed by a globalized agro-export model, continuing the efforts initiated in the 1980s as alternatives to the Green Revolution. With an exploratory and descriptive approach that combined qualitative and quantitative methods, the study identified 203 agroecological experiences in the country. The results provide a broad overview of the Costa Rican agroecological sector, serving as a basis for future research. This work contributes to understanding current dynamics, identifying gaps in the documentation of these initiatives, and guiding strategies and policies toward the strengthening and expansion of agroecology, consolidating it as a sustainable alternative in the national context. |
