| Descripción: | In Costa Rica, access to water and sanitation remains fundamental challenges to sustainable development. This study seeks to highlight disparities in access to these services between the Central Region and the Huetar Caribe region of Costa Rica. Its theoretical approach combines center–periphery perspectives with ecological economics and political ecology. Methodologically, it employs bibliographic reviews, case studies, and interviews. As a result, the periphery shows greater reliance on traditional water supply sources, greater deprivation of water access, and lower availability of wastewater treatment technologies compared to the center, showing a sense of urgency in the face of possible socio-environmental conflicts. |
