Description:Voluntary consumption of fresh food by captive howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata and A. pigra). Howler monkeys are a relatively large and widespread species of Neotropical monkeys. We studied fresh food acceptance in animals housed at the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City for seven consecutive days. The animals consume on average 844,06±35,90g of fresh food per animal per day, or 12,23±1,52% of their body weight (BW), lower than earlier reports of 15% of BW. The average of rejected fresh food was 551,04±34,94g per animal per day, or  39,49±2,38% of the offered fresh food. The high rejection rate may reflect the natural behavior of wild howler monkeys.KEY WORDSAlouatta, consume, food, zoo, howler monkey
