Description:This article discusses the disputed university model exposed in the middle of the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 virus pandemic, as well as the social and economic crisis resulting from this. It begins with a genealogy on the bases and principles on which the university is founded and the transformations that problematize the role of the Latin American public university. Next, it reflects on the role of the University of Costa Rica in this crisis, focusing on serving the vulnerable communities and populations through one of its three substantive activities: Social Action.
