Kuvaus:The selective reconstruction of World War II by ultranationalists in Japan has fueled anti-Japanese sentiments and weakened the international relations in East Asia. Nevertheless, the ultra-nationalist discourse with which the entire Japanese collective is often associated is just one of many positions struggling for recognition in the Japanese public sphere. Which of these “discourses” have become coexist and compete in Japanese society and what do they imply for East Asian neo-nationalism? Using primary sources, this paper examines the patterns of commemoration of World War II that have been widespread in Japanese society and culture from the end of the war to the present. This with the aim of creating a systematic framework that reveals their main assumptions and consequences.
