Description:This paper explores anticlericalism in Mexico during the Restored Republic (1867-1876) through the newspaper El Libre Pensador, under the hypothesis that the publication is both a response to the edition of Catholic media La Voz de México, and an attempt to unify the progressive spectrum around the banners of the Reformation. However, it also constitutes an indication of the struggles within and between the different masonic bodies of the period. El Libre Pensador proposed some conceptual operations aimed not only at constructing a unified vision of the liberal future, but also at presenting a critical view of the Catholic Church.
