Symplocos retusa is distinguished by its entire leaf blades with a conspicuous retuse apex; purple, pentamer- ous, pedicellate, solitary, axillary flowers subtended by deciduous bracts; fruit apex flat and distended beyond the point of calyx lobe attachment.
