Diagnostic and therapeutic approach of genitourinary syndrome in menopausia; Upgrade.

| Beskrivning: | Background: The genitourinary syndrome in menopause is a chronic and progressive clinical condition, common in postmenopausal women. Objective: To review knowledge for the diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary syndrome in menopause. Methodology: A systematic search was made in the main databases: Hinari, MEDLINE, Redalyc, NCBI, BVS, SciELO, LILACS, ScienceDirect, Ovid, ProQuest, Bibliomed and Pubmed; also in different electronic medical journals with the search criteria (MeSH and DeCS thesauri) in Spanish: atrofia vulvovaginal, vaginitis atrófica, vulvovaginitis atrófica y síndrome genitourinario; in english: atrophic vulva, atrophic vulvovaginal, urogenital atrophy and genitourinary. The following limits were used: female sex, spanish and english, published in the last 20 years. We obtained 159 results, of which 132 were considered relevant. Results: Once therapy is started, the symptoms and signs of the genitourinary syndrome improve significantly, with objective and subjective improvements, both vulvovaginal and urinary, and in the sexual response cycle. Conclusion: Genitourinary changes in postmenopausal vulvovaginal atrophy can have a negative impact on a woman's quality of life, however, non-hormonal and hormonal treatments may provide the solution for recovery. |
