Description:Loneliness can be seen from several edges: while in the European context it is mostly associated with independence, in the Latin American environment it is considered such as a risk factor. It is important to define loneliness to later answer the question: What does make elderly people feel lonely? For this, health issues faced during adulthood and the differences that gender establishes with respect to the perception of loneliness are integrated. Strategies are also provided to deal with loneliness during elderly age. Conclusions: culture, socio-historical moment, socioeconomic status, health and gender influences the perception of loneliness in the elderly
