Descripción:An investigation of the free atmosphere over the central region of Venezuela is made utilizing the radiosonde data from Maracay station (10.15° N, 67.39° W, 436 m of altitude) for the 1980-1995 period. In general, a seasonal variation is observed. At the surface, the lowest values of temperature, relative humidity, and mixing ratio occur between November and Feb-ruary (dry season), while the highest values occur between April and October (rainy season). A similar pattern is observed at higher levels up to about 150 hPa. The tropopause axis is located at about 100 hPa the entire year. The lowest values of the thickness between geopotential levels occur during the rainy season, while the highest values occur in April and May (when the highest temperatures at these levels are observed). During the rainy season, potential instability occurs at lower layers (up to about 700 hPa). Above 700 hPa and up to 500 hPa a potentially neutral atmosphere is observed. In the dry season, potentially neutral conditions at the surface and poten-tially unstable conditions between 700 and 500 hPa are observed. Between 500 and 300 hPa, the atmosphere is potentially unstable the whole year. In general, conditional instability occurs up to 500 hPa during the rainy season. Above this level and up to 300 hPa there is conditional stability the entire year. In the dry season, the atmosphere is conditionally stable from the surface up to 850 hPa, conditionally unstable from 850 up to 700 hPa, and conditionally neutral from 700 to 300 hPa. Easterly winds from the surface to 400 hPa are observed all year round. Above this level and up to 70 hPa, westerly winds are present between November and April (dry season). The presence of these westerly winds increases the vertical shear. In the dry season, the values of the Showalter index indicate unfavorable condi-tions for the occurrence of convective rain. On the contrary, during the rainy season the values of the Showalter index indicate the occurrence of showers and storms.
