University Engagement as a Strategy for Community Outreach through English Learning: The Case of San Jorge de Cutris in San Carlos

Beskrivelse:Since 2019, a diagnostic and visitation process began in the community of San Jorge de Cutris, specifically with the Asociación de Trabajadores de Finca Muelle (Association of Workers of Finca Muelle) (ADECOFIM, for its acronym in Spanish). The Association was seeking collaboration to provide English language training to its members as a means of fostering interinstitutional ties, community collaboration, and professional development. ADECOFIM was established as a non-profit association in 2014 and since its inception has managed resources through fair trade policies to promote the well-being, training, and continuous improvement of its members, their families, and members of other neighboring communities. This strategic partnership between the Association and the Costa Rican Institute of Technology (ITCR, for its acronym in Spanish) began in 2022 as a community engagement project in collaboration with the Costa Rican Technology Foundation (Fundatec, for its acronym in Spanish). By 2024, it became an extension project that later evolved as a university engagement initiative. The project consisted of a customized academic English training program for an initial pilot group of 30 individuals, and in 2025, 16 students graduated, having demonstrated significant progress in English. This university extension project highlights the importance of addressing academic needs to empower rural communities committed to professional development and recognizing English as a key language, not only for personal growth but also to strengthen English proficiency in the Huetar Norte Region.
