| Descripción: | This study presents the results of a qualitative analysis describing and classifying algebraic errors made by pre-service mathematics teachers during their initial training when entering the MAC400 Fundamental Mathematics course in the Bachelor's and Licentiate Degree Program in Mathematics Teaching at the National University of Costa Rica, based on a diagnostic test. A sample of 24 informant students was selected from three groups. The test contents correspond to basic algebra, which is the focus area of the course. The study revealed that students enter the course with deficiencies in basic algebraic knowledge, particularly errors related to the development of invalid algorithms or rules for performing additions and multiplications of polynomials, which subsequently lead to errors in other operations with algebraic expressions. |
