Descripción:The objective of the study was to evaluate blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) growth and efficiency parameters when consuming commercial feeds with different nutritional contents under different daily feeding rates (DFR). The 56-day investigation was carried out at the Alfredo Volio Mata Experimental Station (EEAVM) of the University of Costa Rica, using 96 previously hormone-reversed fingerlings, with an initial weight of 5 ± 1.5 g. After acclimatization for 10 days, the fish were divided according to their weight into groups of six in twelve tanks. Commercial feeds A and B with 40% and 36% crude protein (CP) were used at an initial DFR of 5% and 7%, respectively. The treatments CP 40/7, CP 36/7, CP 40/5, and CP 36/5 were randomly assigned, resulting in four repetitions each. Feed consumption was monitored daily and every 15 days the animals were measured to assess weight gains (P), standard length (LE), total width (AT), thermal growth coefficient (CTC), specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor K (FK), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and viscerosomatic index (IVS). Feed energy was the main determinant in the DP:DE ratio, which was 91.04 g DP/Mcal DE in feed A and 82.66 g DP/Mcal DE in B, both lower than those reported in the guaranteed analysis. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed between treatments according to the initial TAD applied, 7% resulted in better growth variables (P, LE, AT, SGR, and CTC) and 5% in those of efficiency (PER and FCR). The food only affected significantly (p = 0.035) the final LE and the TAD-food interaction on the IVS (p = 0.016). However, they were not considered determinants of the general performance of the animals.
