Descripción:The principal virus disease of pepper in San Josecito de Alajuela, Costa Rica, is caused by a strain of potato virus Y. The experimental host range includes a large number of weeds that may constitute field sources of the pepper virus. Physalis floridana was used as a satisfactory local lesion host for the pepper isolate in all the infectivity tests carried out. The virus withstood dilutions of 10-4 but not of 10-5, a 10 minute exposure to a temperature of 60ºC but not to one of 65ºC, and aging in vitro for 96 hours but not for 120 hours. The virus is transmitted in a nonpersistent manner by Myzus persicae.
