Descripción:This article reviews the theoretical aspects related to the lexicon as a system and to the word as a linguistic element that forms a net of relations. This becomes the starting point for the teaching of lexicon supported by the contribution of applied linguistics. Knowledge of the language and lexicon development require a systematical process, which means, in educational terms, that the data introduced should be administered, organized, and systematized. To achieve this planning, some referential goals should be considered (basic and available lexica: what people know and use) instead of idealistic models. The objective is to achieve a very broad comprehension and a comprehensive production adapted to different types of texts. In that sense, lexicon richness is conceptualized as the appropriate selection or the possibility of renewing knowledge in a way adequate to the verbal environment and to the situational and thematic contexts of the speaking act.
