Περιγραφή:Introduction: Food and nutritional insecurity has increased globally since the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly affecting families in rural areas. In Costa Rica, the Huetar Norte region presents the highest levels of food insecurity, and the Upala canton has the greatest lag in human development and multidimensional poverty. The objective of this study was to characterize the dimensions the food and nutritional security situation of families in the Upala canton, to generate useful information to strengthen interinstitutional actions. Methodology: A quantitative approach was applied with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design and a descriptive scope. A total of 23 families associated with a University of Costa Rica extension project participated in this study. Structured telephone interviews were conducted, addressing sociodemographic aspects, production and food practices, food security (using the ELCSA scale), and nutritional status. Results: The majority of the families in this study suffer from extreme poverty and high food vulnerability. Also, they rely on self-consumption, with fewer sources of animal protein, fruits, and vegetables. Some situations were identified in these families, such as gender inequality at work, limited youth participation, and difficulties in marketing their products. Overweight was found in children under 5 years of age, malnutrition in schoolchildren and adolescents, and obesity in adults. Conclusions: That food insecurity, in the families studied in Upala, is related to poverty, low dietary diversity, and productive barriers. Sustainable strategies with a gender perspective and youth inclusion are needed to strengthen family farming and improve access to adequate food sources.
