Contributions and challenges of Social Work in the approach to the environment

Descripción:Introduction: This article presents the main results of the project «VI 215-B6-092 Social Work, Society and Environment» of the School of Social Work at the University of Costa Rica. Objective: To identify the contributions and challenges of Social Work in the approach to the environment. Method: This research was developed through literature review of Thesis of the School of Social Work on environmental issues from 1983 to 2014. Likewise, an online questionnaire and a focus group with Social Work professionals were conducted. Results: Social Work has studied and intervened in very diverse environmental areas. According to the perspective of students and professionals, the Social Work profession has fundamentally contributed to the critical and holistic understanding of environmental issues, fostering an education and a culture of change based on a human rights perspective. As challenge, it is identified the need for the School of Social Work at the University of Costa Rica to develop the environmental area in a clearer and stronger way in the study plan of School, as well as promote a greater impulse to carry out interdisciplinary work with inter-institutional and inter-sector alliances.
