Descrizione:In Costa Rica, the payment for environmental services was ratified by law since 1996, taking advantage of the new international proposal of the carbon market. Nevertheless, the political disagreements surrounding the discussions on a decrease in global warming have set back the market’s launching. In the interim, Costa Rica has prepared a forest protection program that has placed all hopes for success on this dubious market. Currently, government financing for environmental protection, management, and reforestation is decreasing, despite its legal backing. This is due to the fact that the mechanism depends on government budget, at a time of economic crisis. In spite of this, the system has found creative solutions for involving the private sector within this scheme.
