| Popis: | This article explores some of the theoretical and empiric relationships between social capital and poverty in Costa Rica. Social Capital is defined as the value of social relationships through “norms of reciprocity”. Data was taken from Latin America Public Opinion Project (LAPOP, 2004) and from Population and Housing Census (2000). It was proven that poverty decreases as the social capital increases. Low and high class participate more in formal and informal organizations that medium class. Urban areas have a smaller probability of being poor, in comparison with the rural neighborhoods. However, rural areas are richer in social capital. Future research should improve the social capital indicators in order to study the organizations and networks where poor people can participate and can improve their situation. |
