Description:This article presents research on how linguistic markers of the plural of modesty are used in 18 text excerpts published in culture and literature magazines in Brazil and Portugal to attenuate authorial presence. The analysis adopted a mainly qualitative perspective, theoretically based on studies from different branches of Linguistics and Pragmatics, and also provided descriptive statistical analysis. The analysis shows that in all occurrences in the corpus, both in Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese, the Pluralis modestiae is associated with the suppression of the first-person pronoun “nós” (we), a combination that amplifies the sense of mitigation, related to four uses: a) credibility anchored to the illusion of neutrality and convention of academic and journalistic spheres; b) discourse structuring; c) politeness and softening of imperative content; and d) preservation of face in the face of a controversial topic.
