Profile of students of librarianship and information science at the University of Costa Rica

| Descripción: | The paper provides demographic, academic, labor features and economic characteristics of the family, of a the student population of the School of Library and Information Science (EBCI for its acronym in spanish) of the University of Costa Rica, in 2011. The proposed objective in this research was to develop a profile of the students studying at the time the School Library and Information Science (BBCI for its acronym in spanish), taking into account the features and characteristics mentioned in the first lines of this summary. Each feature is analyzed generally and for five control variables. The study was quantitative, exploratory and descriptive. For this study, a census of the student population was conducted; in it 201 students participated of the baccalaureate programs offered by the EBCI. The main results were: the majority of the student population is female, and this condition is maintained at all the levels offered by the school; there is a majority of female students from rural populations, while the male population mostly belongs to the metropolitan area. This situation affects the students to look for a job in order to help their families financially. We conclude that although most students do not formally work, they probably work in the university under an informal mode as assistants. Some of the variables analyzed in this profile manifested by age and race courses that major changes. |
